Chris Standring - Hip Sway
Kenny Love
Man! That Chris Standring's overall musical presence is like a
runaway freight train! Not only is he one of a few active recording/performing
artists to ever publish a highly detailed online e-book culminated from
actual experience, he also has one hell of a CD. What's more, the e-book titled, "So You Think You Want A Record Deal?,"
also carries a FREE companion database of contact information to over 3000
record labels. I have a copy of each and they are quite simply, awesome.
They are both available as downloadable files at his
website.
Every musician, whether hoping to get signed by a major, large independent,
or just wishes to operate in the business realm of music much smarter and
faster that the competition, should make Chris' new books their primary
"inside" sources.
And, artists should do so, if for no other reason than they are written
by an active recording and performing artist, and not some executive who
only writes from theory and may (or may not even) have ever actively been
involved in the music industry.
But, what about his music? Well, after listening to the honestly acquired
styling of Chris Standring, I can only say that his entire repertoire makes
me glad to be alive, especially in a music world plastered with bubblegum
Pop so transparent that the life span of #1 hits can, at best, be described
as short-lived. Standring, alternatively, happens to be a part of the genre
that I am most in touch with...Jazz. And, whether that's Cafe Jazz,
Acid Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, or Smooth Jazz, at times, Mr. Standring appears
to encompass most, if not all, successfully.
Just a few recognizable heavyweights who he has collaborated with include;
Richard Elliot, Kirk Whalum, Rick Braun, Tony Guerrero, Rodney Lee, Dino
Soldo,
Andre Berry, David Karasony, Derrick Edmondson and John Menzano.
On at least one occasion, Chris has been, basically, referred to as
a neo-Wes Montgomery. And while Montgomery's shoes are certainly
no small size to step into, personally, I believe Standring is well deserving
of his own time and space. For proof, review his music and more at
his excellent
website.
For, though I may have missed his earlier works, you can bet I'm saddling
up for the ride on 'Catch-up Road', as I attempt to listen to anything
he's ever done to date.
