Prozak for Lovers - Prozak for Lovers
Limeygit
Now if I was a 'real' music journalist I would flare my nostrils at
this product, glibly write something involving the word 'gimmick' and head
out to pad the expense account. Of course I am not so I can happily wallow
in the unprofessional fact I love this album, a collection of ten fairly-classic
songs rendered in excellent bossa nova muzak for the masses style. Dreamy
and soothing are probably never words you thought could be used to describe
'London Calling', but now they can.
Joining the title track of the best punk album ever are covers of Bowie's
'Rebel Rebel', CCR's "Proud Mary' and Blue Oyster Cult's seminal piece
of silliness '(Don't Fear) the Reaper', to name but three. In all just
over forty minutes of relaxing sounds.
The album consists of two voices, one male and one female that half
sing, half talk their way across a pretty broad section of the history
of popular music. The result is strangely sultry despite its lack of highs
and lows, no guitar solos or screaming choruses here. Also it is amazing
how incredibly effective lyrics can be neutered so totally when they are
whispered over music that makes you want to drink cocktails till dawn and
prove you are wittier than Oscar Wilde. Not that this is an album without
soul, Bruce Lash the male vocalist, and brains behind this project did
his research, choose the songs well, provided some excellent production
and most importantly brought in Maura Corey. Ms Corey being the female
vocalist that helps provide some balance and sexiness to the whole affair.
All of the songs are handled with reverence, and the structure of each
song is kept intact, just instrumented with congas, flutes, chimes and
the like. Check out the way they deal with the whole transition section
of '(Don't Fear) the Reaper' to see what I mean, a real excellent job on
the part of Mr. Leash.
Luckily for you people, you can sample all of the tracks at CD Baby,
so head over there and give 'Prozak for Lovers' a listen. This is an album
you will either dig or not, it really is a taste thing. Personally I can't
think of anything better to play quietly in the background as you attempt
to cook spaghetti for the one you love, or at least are lusting after this
week.
