Neglected Sheep - Geno Died
Limeygit
1995 seems an awfully long time ago now. Just five years but the music
world has spun around several different trends since then. Back in the
mid nineties though Grunge still cast a very long shadow, and we were witnessing
the start of a new alternative music.
Also in 1995 a Charlotte NC band called Neglected Sheep released their
first full-length album, ‘Geno Died’ and it is, well a pretty odd affair.
Stuck somewhere in between about seven different genres, and with a singer
who has an interesting voice, that is full of quirky charm, but lacking
in any musical talent. Still that never stopped Bob Dylan did it?
You can spot anything from Grunge to Country to Indie-Pop to Roots
to Alternative to Hootie and the Blowfish type roots warbling.
The problem is though the band does not confidently strut between genres,
but more they slide like a barely controlled car through the spectrum and
back again. In fact bizarrely the thing that holds it all together is Singer
Kevin Harrison’s out of tune vocals, he puts so much passion and feeling
in it is kind of scary.
The music is at best catchy hum along alternative, at worst strum-by-number
run through of typical mid 1990’s rock. The kind of album you want to borrow
from your friend and tape rather than go out and buy.
Since this release Neglected Sheep have moved on musically, nailed
down their sound a little and replaced Kevin Harrison with a far more accomplished,
although somehow less charming vocalist, a good career move, but a shame
for those of us who love the concept of quirkiness in our music. Check
out their site and give some of the tracks a listen before you make any
decision in terms of purchase.
Now how long do I have to wait for Mr. Harrison’s solo efforts to grace
my CD player!
