Bernie Journey – Bernie Journey

Limeygit

Slick '80s inspired pop, soft and innocent, devoid of any anger or political messages. Music to try and fit back into those jeans from 1986 with. Music to remember the glory days of British-inspired white boy soul with. Bernie Journey’s self-title album is all this and more. Those desiring depth, angst, loud guitars, or innovation form a queue somewhere else. Someone who wants something mellow and shallow, yet still a lot of fun, well Mr. Journey is accepting orders for his 8 track debut CD right now.
The CoverThe production is also pretty mid-eighties with its soft gloss coat, so at odds with the rough and ready, or over the top polish in vogue today. Even the front cover of the album has him lying on the floor, looking decidedly Marc Almond like, on top of a crayon drawn universe.
Maybe they perfected time travel back in the mid-eighties and Bernie was that lucky first traveler. Now he is just trying to make some money while waiting for them to come rescue him from this terrorist ridden bleak future, so that he can go back and tell everyone that, sad at this may seem, the eighties is about as fun as it is going to get for a while.
Opener 'Jump in & Out of my Love' is a swishy little radio-friendly tune, the voice is nicely up-front, but at times you have to strain to make out the instrumentation. A very nice little pop song, and a good choice for an opener. 'Wounded Child' is next, and it is an excellent example of a subtle blend of older and newer music. Some nicely understated guitar as well.
'Ran away from me' reminds me, for reasons I can not pin down, of old-school Prince, only without the massive ego. In fact everything on the album is worthy of a listen. 'Set me Free' is probably my favorite, I would love to hear it with big-ass production, a full gospel choir, the Hammond organ going full blast etc.
So if you are hankering for something that is unashamedly white boy soul, that will slip in and out of your CD player and leave you with a nice nostalgic feeling, then you could do a lot worse than the name rhyming Bernie Journey.
