Exploding Head - Worm EP
Limeygit
Think Retro, think Fuzzy, think Retro-Fuzzy, that ladies and gentlemen
is a pretty good description of the sublime Exploding Head, a kind of temporary
between other stuff band comprising of members of Electramone and Orange
Beauties. On this six track, twenty minute offering they produce a pretty
good impression of a mid sixties power pop band with a Sonic Youth style
coating of fuzziness dripping from all areas of the production.
Track one is ‘Portable AM’, and gets your mind set admirably for the
tone of the EP. Mild distortion, swirling guitars, weird lyrics and weirder
delivery, all wrapped up in some pretty strong song writing. Track two
is the cute named ‘Horsey’ which reminds me of how the ‘Foo Fighters’ would
sound if they were an unknown band without the whole Nirvana thing hanging
over them. Next is ‘From the Back of Your Home’ which is so sixties pop
it hurts, that and the vocal pattern reminds me of "My Sherona".
'Sugar Coated' uses the old voice through a guitar amp trick
(at least that’s what it sounds like), ‘Knight’ is the most experimental
track on display, and boasts some very strong production. Rounding of this
little beauty is ‘Bone Crush’ which starts with some classical music, before
falling back into the welcome arms of fuzzy guitars.
The EP is full of little tricks in terms of production, none of them
brand new, but all of them cool as hell and executed to perfection. Exploding
Head are so much better than a side project band have any right to be,
this is a really interesting EP, with 6 excellent little pop songs. If
you like good songwriting, and of course Retro-Fuzzy then you may have
just found what you were looking for.
