Darby Jones - Racket on the Seventh Floor

Driver 8

I’m always a little leery of songs that make me feel I can play the drums. I bang these clunkers out on the steering wheel of my car or while I’m sitting down to dinner at the kitchen table.  Now I’m about as talented as a third rate Mickey Dolenz so most of these songs leave something to be desired on the talent scale. Not true for the latest batch of songs from Darby Jones whose tunes make me want to play because they are so damn catchy.
The 10 songs on Darby Jones’, 'Racket on the Seventh Floor' can be summed up in one word: pop-o-liscious. From the opening song 'Nametag' with its Cheap Trick like intro to the melodic 'Long Path' this is a pop music gem. And yes, Mr. Clark; "It’s got a good beat and it’s easy to dance to. I give it a 95."
Darby JonesThis highlight of the CD is 'Shannon' a danceable and catchy tune whose lyrics also manage to capture the post-modern world of dating in a surprisingly upbeat manner.  "And I gather from your laughter I might be the one you’re after.  With the night’s snow outside I contemplate disaster."
It’s refreshing in these jaded times to find a pop song that can cut through the BS and address some honest emotion.  Bravo.
The rest of the album is solid though none of the other 9 songs match the standards set by 'Shannon'. There is no shame in that because 'Shannon' is that good. Two other pop-pleasure-pills on the CD are the introspective 'Soapbox' which takes a look at the complexities of being an individual and comes to the realistic conclusion that there are few answers to most of life’s questions. 'Carry it Well' also reaches towards the same questions but with a lighter touch. Pairing these songs back-to-back is a satisfying experience for the listener.
The whole album is a rewarding experience giving a glimpse at the true potential of popular music.  This New Jersey band are a group that deserves to be heard. Do yourself a favor and check them out.  Final word from their song 'Mystique': "then in the constraints of mediocrity I find a gem."
‘Racket on the Seventh Floor’ is one of those gems.
