Cylob - Living in the 1980's (CD Single)
Limeygit
I had read a lot of good things about Cylob, in reality a guy named
Chris Jeffs, who is signed to the Aphex Twin's label Rephlex and by all
accounts is doing music in a very similar vein, in other words one man
and his computer explore the musical universe. The reality of this CD single
is an enjoyable if slightly formulaic romp through the concept of post-modern
late 1990's dance music. You can take the concept of post-modernism two
ways, either it is an artful reworking of the past or it is an excuse to
steal rather than invent. I can't really decide which side of the fence
this single falls on.
The two tracks presented here are 'Living in the 1980's' and 'Sex Machine'.
The former is an excuse to produce a retro dance sound and go all 80's
on us. It features the vocal talents of a lady named Jane Sharp, and Cylob
actual appears for a short, heavily effected rap. The second track features
a computerized voice and deals with love between domestic appliances.
It's an enjoyable two tracks, but there is nothing here to get really
excited about. Or maybe the concept of using computer generated music to
reminisce about the 1980's is something that works better in a club environment
rather than on CD. If you are into the whole club scene, and are old enough
to remember the 1980's you will get a kick out of this release, otherwise
it will probably pass you by. Nevertheless it hints, if not actually pointing
directly, at a genuine techno talent. We shall have to see if he can develop
it further than humorous retro tracks or not.
