Let's get straight to the point. Cindy Alexander looks great, sounds even
better and has a debut album packed full of well-written, potential pop-rock
hits -- so can someone please explain exactly why A&R men aren't currently
forming a disorderly queue around her? (Because they are all moronic hacks
- Ed)
 See Red is highly polished, commercial-sounding pop/rock that should need
no higher recommendation than the fact that famed LA producer David Darling
saw enough talent in Alexander to have produced the majority of its 11 tracks.
The pop-rock of opener "Better Than I Am" sets the scene for the rest of
the album and justifies this faith in Alexander's music, while "Sick of Myself"
is a great line in edgy modern-sounding pop with some superb, paranoid lyrics.
It's an album with a real diversity and richness that tips a wink to Alexander's
influences (Meredith Brooks, Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow) yet almost everything
about it shows an individuality, intelligence and talent that shows it's
about time Alexander added to her gong for Outstanding Songwriter at the
1998 LA Music Awards.
 The material ranges from the spine-chilling piano of "Prophet" and "City
Astronaut" to the raucous, twang-rock of the anthemic "Joei" and "I'm OK"
to the pure pop of "In My Box". Along with the shimmering delicacy of the
ballad "Time Falling Down", these songs have melodies to die for and a surefire
hit potential that would reward anyone clever enough to offer Ms Alexander
the chance she undoubtedly deserves.
Perhaps the only thing preventing her from reaching the big time is a reluctance
on the part of the A&R men who often frequent her sold-out shows in LA
to sign another female singer-songwriter when that particular market is perhaps
oversubscribed already.
Nevertheless, great songs, intelligent, tongue-in-cheek lyrics ("Joei hit
the big time on her own / She's just got a billboard / Are They Real or Silicone?" -- "Joei"), and a real vocal presence means that, in case you hadn't noticed, See Red comes HIGHLY recommended.
