Barnyard Ballers - Psychobilly Invasion

Limeygit

Oh if I was just ten years younger I would think this album was superb, Metal, Punk, Country and Rockabilly music played behind some of the most bizarre lyrics you’ll ever hear. Sex is the obvious muse of choice here, and not always with humans unfortunately, although women, particular those with a preference for other women, or with large breasts are a major theme of this album too. Yep ten years ago I would have lapped it up with a spoon, and amazed my friends by recounting the twisted lyrics during Maths. (Hey I’m British and we had Maths not Math.)
Psychobilly InvasionSeeing as I am reviewing this album without the benefit of a time machine I will have to be considerably more qualified. Musically they are a very tight four piece, complete with an old fashioned stand-up bass. Apart from the occasional unnecessary straying into Metallica territory they blend the various elements with confidence and style, particularly on Blood Feud and Dangerous Man, for me the two best tracks on the album.
The lyrics are a different matter, if I could sense some irony or wit there I might have been swayed, but instead this is an attempt to get very gross humor out of very crass issues. That said I don’t think either Adam Sandler or Jim Carey are funny either, so I may not be expressing the views of the great American public here folks.
The production quality is surprisingly good, the packaging is interesting if only because it contradicts itself to the actual title of the album. The front cover says "Punkabilly Invasion", whilst the side and back say "Psychobilly Invasion". My tireless research (man I love press releases) suggest that it should be refereed to as "Psychobilly Invasion".
Barnyard BallersThe band apparently have a very rabid live following, I will spare you the story about self mutilation by fans live on stage, and as much as you can tell from an album, they are probably a very reliable and entertaining live act.
So although not an album likely to get heavy rotation on my second rate CD player, it is not a bad record by any means. If you like Punkabilly and think songs about Farm Animals, Self Love and Silicone Implants are da bomb (See I'm hip with the kids!) then this may very well be your album of the year. Although not for me sadly, I have to admit though it is more entertaining than Ricky Martin.
