Get beaten like a red-headed step child
T A Gilmartin
How could I not be interested in a band that bills themselves as the
red-headed stepchild of Patsy Cline and the Buzzcocks? Wandering aimlessly
on the Internet one day I stumbled into Atlanta-based, what is it with
me and this city (We were wondering that to-Ed), trio the Stimulants.
Chatting with lead singer Sue B from her home we had one of the more
entertaining interviews I’ve ever conducted. First, due to scheduling conflicts
this interview was scheduled and rescheduled for about a month. Then when
we finally got around to talking halfway through the interview the wonderful
construction crew working next door to my house took out the phone box.
A true trooper, I finished the interview outside under a tree on my cell
phone, hey, Ma Bell hasn’t figured out how to get cell service to my house
yet. Of course the bill always finds me, but I digress. Without further
ado, please welcome to Indiemonkey three women, bass player Jeana and drummer
Susan round out the Stimmies, who like playing rock n roll loud and are
big fans of Joan Jett, what more could we ask for?
Where did the name the stimulants come from?
Our first drummer made it up. Kind of self-examination of what we really
are. It was the first one we all agreed on. Most of them were fighting
matters. I like the sound of it, it started with an S.
You’ve called yourself the red-headed step-child of the Buzzcocks
and Patsy Cline, what are some other influences?
All together we like Joan Jett for that balls out rock; the Pretenders they’re
really cool. Most of our influences are pretty general Who, Beatles. Pasty,
she’s more influential on the vocal side.
Any summer tour plans?
The Hells Bells. Weekend jaunts with other female bands to college
towns. Vessels of Sin, Cat Fight, Baby Fat, nothing is set yet though.
Stimulants history?
The line-up has changed many times in the last 5-years. Started as
a three-piece added a violinist, but she took off shortly thereafter. The
current line-up is my favorite line-up.
The Stimulants are working on a new album. How many new songs? When
is it coming out?
It’s going great. We’re taking our time. Having tons of fun. We got
into a really great studio where the guy who’s engineering it is making
a lot of suggestions to us. We have three more songs to record. We just
finished mixing 10 of them. It’s going to be called Sunspot Lollipops.
It is a take off on a Lesley Gore song 'Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows',
which we are going to record. It might come out a little acoustical. Not
sure, we might rock it out or it might be with a tambourine and a banjo.
It will be Stimulants style.
Will you be shopping this album to major labels?
We’ve got an indie label we’re working with. Second Heaven, it’s internet-based,
less a label, more distribution and promotion. I think they said they might
shop it to major labels, pretty much it is up to them.
Your mascot, a chick with a guitar in one hand and a wrench in the
other. What is up with that?
A friend of mine, Dwight, did that. He was just sitting around and
said ‘what about this.’ And we’re like ‘Oh, those are awesome! They’re
just cool.' Not sure what the wrench means. Go around and fix things. It’s
all a Dwight invention.
